Your Guide to Supporting a Healthy Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is an often overlooked network of vessels throughout the body that work to help the body fight infection, drain away cellular waste, and help the body maintain fluid levels.

Unfortunately, this highly important system is often not functioning optimally in many people due to modern lifestyle and nutrition habits.

Let’s have a look at some of the signs of an underfunctioning lymph system and how to support lymphatic health like a pro.

How Does the Lymphatic System Work?

The lymphatic system is made up of a network of nodes and tubes throughout the body. The nodes work to filter and break down germs, toxins and debris which is then carried in the lymphatic tubes from the tissues and drain it into the bloodstream once ‘cleaned.’

Underfunctioning Lymph

Some of the first signs of an underfunctioning lymphatic system are skin issues such as acne, clogged pores, eczema, dry skin, puffy eyes, and ‘dull’ looking complexion. This is because around one third of lymph nodes are located around the face in the neck and jaw area.

You may also notice that lymph nodes are a bit swollen, swollen hands or feet, headaches, weight gain, brain fog and general fatigue.

It’s always a good idea to check with your health care provider if you notice any of these symptoms to rule out anything more serious.

How to Support Lymphatic Drainage

A healthy body includes a healthy lymphatic system, and many steps you take for overall health will also support lymphatic drainage. Let’s have a look at some key ways to support the lymph system if you notice feeling a bit sluggish here.

1. Stay Well Hydrated- Water is essential for the lymph system's capacity to flush out. Making sure to stay well hydrated is an excellent support to drainage.

2. Live Clean- The less toxins your body has to cope with in terms of pesticides, additives, and chemicals, the less the lymph system will have to filter out. The same goes for cleaning products and cosmetics.

3. Move it- Exercise is one of the biggest ways to stimulate lymphatic drainage. Moving for at least 30 mins a day goes a long way. Yoga is especially effective in helping move things along.

4. Acupuncture or Massage- Certain acupuncture points can support lymph drainage, and some massage practitioners specialise in massage to promote healthy drainage. Consider pampering yourself to a relaxing treatment.

5. Hot and Cold Therapy- Alternating hot and cold water or a cold plunge with a steam or sauna works to dilate and constrict blood vessels and create a ‘pumping’ action to help drain the lymph nodes.

6. Dry Brushing and Gua Sha- Brushing the skin gently with a natural bristle brush stimulates the lymph nodes, and can be done before a shower for best results. Similarly, incorporating stone gua sha tools into your skincare routine helps to massage the lymph nodes in the face and neck and promote better skin health.

7. Lymph Supporting Foods- Some foods that support the lymph system are dark leafy greens like kale, spinach, chard, beet greens, etc, berries, cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, etc, garlic and nuts and seeds.

8. Lymph Supporting Herbs- Using herbal teas made with calendula, echinacea, goldenseal, wild indigo root, cilantro, and parsley can support the lymphatic system. Just be sure to consult with a health care provider as although herbs are natural, they are powerful and can interact with other medications or health conditions.

9. Avoid Tight Fitting Clothes- Tight clothes can restrict lymphatic drainage and promote blockages. This is especially seen with tight underwire bras or tight waistbands. Choose comfortable loose fitting clothing to allow for unrestricted drainage.
