Walking Is Underrated: Get Outside this Spring!

There is no better time to be enjoying our beautiful city of Victoria than Spring. The blossoms are out everywhere, birds are singing, and the sunlight is the most pleasant feeling of warmth, without being too hot.

The best way to see it? On foot!

Walking is an incredibly underrated form of exercise. In fact, if I had to tell everyone (mobility willing) to do only one activity for the rest of their lives… it would be walking!

No fancy equipment, no high-intensity push, no cortisol spike… just steady, rhythmic movement that your body loves.

Where to Walk in Victoria… Just to Name a Few

There are ENDLESS places to enjoy a nice walk in the Greater Victoria area, I couldn’t possibly list them all. Even many streets here boast beautiful blossoms and gorgeous flowerbeds in front yards to enjoy. But let’s name a few to get us started.

Dallas Road

Probably the most popular by far, the flat walkway along Dallas road boasts ocean air, views of the Olympic mountains, and an extensive off leash dog area if you have a furry friend to take with you.

Cedar Hill Golf Course

A pleasant chip trail circles the golf course which is easier on the joints than pavement. Views, greenspace, and some glorious camus flower blooms at the right time can be spotted. There are a few hills here as well to get the heart pumping.

Songhees Walkway

Another flat walkway system, just across the bridge from downtown, Views of the inner harbour, and plenty of ocean life sightings to be had.

Mount Doug

For the mountain climber, Mount Doug has trails of varying difficulty, and great views of the ocean and the city!

The Galloping Goose/ E&N and Lochside Trail Systems

Go for miles and miles of flat trail, or as short or as far as you like and accessible throughout the GVA, with plenty of green pockets.

Island View Beach

If a beach walk is your thing, island view beach has a nice long stretch of beach to walk along, or a beachside trail if you prefer.

Bonus Tips:

  • Make your walk phone free! Pay attention to your surroundings and enjoy what nature has to offer.

  • Power out a walk with your favourite podcast or audiobook on listen

  • Invite a friend or include the whole family for a shared experience.

  • Walk 10 minutes after eating to reduce glycemic load and help regulate blood sugar

  • Don’t forget to stretch!

In a world obsessed with doing more, faster, harder… walking is your reminder that slower can actually take you further. Lace up those sneakers… let’s go!
