12 Signs Your Body Is Stuck in Fight-or-Flight Mode

There’s a reason they call stress the silent killer. Stress is a major factor in things like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, immune issues, and even cancer so it’s not something to just shrug off. Our nervous system is the physical system behind our bodies response to the stresses of our world, and unfortunately it doesn’t know the difference between the pressures of modern life and being chased by a tiger. All our nervous system recognizes is that something that feels like a threat to our survival is happening and it does its job and gets our body prepared to either fight, fight, or freeze.. whichever one is better conducive to survival.

Alas the pressures of modern living are a bit more insidious than the aforementioned tiger, and while we may run off and escape to safety then settle down out in the natural world… It can feel like there is no escape from the jam packed calendars, the constant trickle of emails, bills to pay, and people we love who need us.

Cue fight or flight becoming our lived in state, and that is no bueno for our bodies.

So let’s have a look at some signs your nervous system might be stuck in this activated state, and how to come out of it so you can live your best tiger free life.

12 Signs Your Fight or Flight is Stuck in ‘ON’ Mode

1. You’re Exhausted But Still Feel Wired

This is a sign that your body is running on stress hormones rather than true energy reserves. It keeps pushing to stay alert, because the threat is still there. You’re tapped out, but your body still doesn’t feel safe to rest.

2. You’re on Edge

Even when everything is “fine” you still can’t shake that feeling that the other shoe is about to drop, something is about to go sideways, and if you let your guard down for a moment, it’s game over. This anxiety may have you feeling irritable, overwhelmed, and snappy.

3. You’re Getting Poor Sleep

Whether you have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, waking up in the middle of the night, or feeling exhausted even though you "got your 8 hours” sleep issues are a big sign of a nervous system that isn’t unwinding properly.

4. Your Digestion Has Seen Better Days

Digesting food becomes a low priority when you’re fighting for your life, and like I said… your nervous system doesn’t know your boss's email isn’t a lion attack. As blood flow is redirected to more essential body systems, you might be left with

  • Bloating

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhea

  • Acid reflux

  • IBS symptoms

  • Poor appetite or increased cravings

5, Your Muscles Be Tight

Tight shoulders, neck pain, jaw clenching, headaches, and back pain are common physical signs that your nervous system is in protection mode, ready to spring into action. You could save thousands on massage therapy just by getting your nervous system right!

6. Your Heart Flutters or Races Even

No, your celebrity crush didn’t just walk by, nor did you just climb a flight of stairs. You’re relaxing on the couch when suddenly your heart is all aflutter. Stress hormones can make your heart rate increase, even when at rest or cause heart palpitations.

7. Your Blood Sugar is All Over the Place

You’re crashing out at 3 pm, you’re shaky, you’re craving sugar.. all good indications you’re dealing with blood sugar issues. Fight-or-flight triggers the release of stored glucose for quick energy to escape that tiger (school drop off.)

8. Your Hormones are Imbalanced

Again, in high stress our bodies prioritize those systems essential for life like our brain, lungs, and heart. Unfortunately our reproductive system doesn’t quite make the cut. Chronic Stress can be the culprit behind issues like PMS, irregular periods, low libido, fertility challenges, and more difficult menopause symptoms.

9. You’re Getting Sick A Lot

When stress is your baseline, immune function may become compromised, making you more susceptible to colds, infections, and slower recovery times. You can stop blaming little Timmy’s kindergarten class.

10. You Can’t Focus

Before you go TikTok diagnosing yourself with ADHD, know that brain fog, forgetfulness, poor concentration, and feeling mentally scattered are common when your nervous system is prioritizing survival over higher-level thinking. Exhibit A why R&R is an essential part of productivity.

11. You’re Overstimulated A Lot

It could be you’re not cool enough for the scene anymore or it could be that your nervous system is stuck in overdrive. If you feel overwhelmed by busy environments, loud sounds, bright lights, or a packed schedule that previously felt manageable, or even fun… well read on.

12. You Can’t Relax

“But Marita, I DO take time for myself.. I pour a big glass of wine, sit down in front of the TV and…” Think non stop about everything you need to do tomorrow? Yeah I thought so. Those non stop thoughts, hyper vigilance, and inability to wind down are a sign your nervous system has lost the off switch.

The Way Out

Your life deserves to be more than one giant tiger chase, and your health and longevity may just depend on it.

Here’s where to start showing your body it’s safe:

  • Eat regular, protein-rich meals to keep blood sugar stable.

  • Limit caffeine, especially later in the day to prepare for sleep.

  • Walk everyday.  Time in nature is proven to reduce stress!

  • Take slow breathing breaks (longer exhales than inhales).

  • Prioritize 7–9 hours of sleep. Screens off 1 hour before bed.

  • Consider nervous system supportive supplements such as magnesium, B vitamins, omega-3s, chamomile, lavender, or adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha and rhodiola.

  • Schedule intentional downtime…not just time spent scrolling.

  • Set boundaries with work. You can’t be on all the time, and you’ll be much more productive if you have a chance to reset each day.

Small daily habits show your body it's safe to relax. In our times more than ever, stress is not just about what happens in life, but about how we intentionally choose to handle it.

Deep breath.
