10 Apps to Support Your Health Journey
Let's face it… our phones aren't going anywhere. While you know I love to yap about how too much screen time is bad for our health, technology can also be a powerful ally when we use it intentionally.
Think of these apps as tools that keep you connected to your health goals, while remembering that listening to your body will always be the most valuable tool you have.
And it should go without saying… apps are tools… not medical professionals.
Cycle trackers cannot diagnose hormonal conditions. Sleep apps cannot diagnose sleep disorders. Nutrition trackers don't replace individualized nutrition advice, but they can help put information in your hands to work with your healthcare providers.
Technology should help you feel more connected to your health, not more overwhelmed. Use it intentionally, celebrate your progress, and remember that no app knows your body better than you do.
1. Natural Cycles
If you're interested in understanding your menstrual cycle, fertility, or hormonal patterns, Natural Cycles is one of the most well-known and evidence-based fertility awareness apps out there.
Using your daily basal body temperature (you can pair your wearables), the app helps identify ovulation, predict periods, and gather information for cycle trends. There is a place to log all sorts of physical and emotional symptoms to see how they line up with your cycle and over time, many women begin noticing patterns that allow them to have more informed conversations with their healthcare providers.
Great for:
Fertility awareness for either planning or avoiding pregnancy
Monitoring hormonal changes
Perimenopause tracking
PMOS/PCOS symptom tracking
Period prediction
Mood and symptom awareness
2. Finch: Self-Care Pet
Any former Tamogachi parents out there? Finch turns self-care into a game. You care for a virtual bird by completing real-life healthy habits like drinking water, taking medications, stretching, working out, meditating, or simply getting out of bed on difficult days.
It may sound silly, but it's surprisingly motivating and encourages consistency through fun rather than guilt.
4. One Sec
Ever find yourself opening social media without even realizing it?
One Sec interrupts that automatic habit by inserting a short pause before distracting apps open. That tiny moment encourages you to ask yourself whether you actually want to use the app or if you're simply acting out of habit.
Many users find their daily screen time drops dramatically after using it.
5. Opal
If you're looking for stronger screen-time boundaries, Opal allows you to block distracting apps and websites during work hours, family time, or before bed.
It helps create intentional "phone-free" periods so you can be more present with the people and activities that matter most, and prepare you for a good sleep sans blue light.
6. Insight Timer
Stress management doesn't have to mean hour-long meditation sessions.
Insight Timer offers thousands of guided meditations, breathing exercises, calming music, yoga classes, and sleep stories ranging from just a few minutes to much longer sessions. There is also a free style timer for taking a custom moment of quiet.
7. MyFitnessPal or Chronometer
Although calorie tracking isn't appropriate for everyone, many people find it helpful for learning more about their eating habits and ensuring they're getting enough protein, fibre, and other nutrients. You can see in real time where your diet is needing some tweaks, or where a supplement could be useful.
8. Waterllama or WaterMinder
It’s easy to forget to drink enough water, but good hydration is one of the simplest and most important ways to improve energy, digestion, focus, and exercise recovery. These apps provide fun reminders and help you stay on track throughout the day.
9. Sleep Cycle
Quality sleep is a non-negotiable foundation for good health.
Sleep Cycle monitors your sleep patterns and uses smart alarms to wake you during lighter stages of sleep whenever possible, helping you feel more refreshed in the morning. It also provides insights into sleep consistency and habits over time to help you with better sleep quality, and building better sleep routines.
10. AllTrails
Movement is best done out in the fresh air to support mental health, cardiovascular health, reduce stress, and get your vitamin N… Nature!
AllTrails helps you discover local hiking trails, walking routes, and outdoor adventures. It also provides information on trail difficulty, distance, elevation, and reviews from other hikers.
The best health app is the one you'll actually use consistently.
Choose one or two apps that support your current goals rather than downloading ten all at once. Remember that small daily actions add up over time.
Happy tracking!
