Healing Leaky Gut

Healing Leaky gutThe Institute of Functional Medicine developed a program when treating digestive disorders such as leaky gut. Many Naturopathic Doctors (including myself) and other complimentary health care providers use this program.

The 4R Program

1. Remove any offending foods that are triggering an immune reaction in the gut.

Common food sensitivities include: dairy, gluten, eggs, peanuts, citrus, soy and corn. Also remember to get rid of the junk food including processed, GMO food with artificial sugars and additives. Too much coffee, alcohol and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) can be irritating to the gut as well.

2. Replace with digestive aids such as stimulating healthy stomach acid and digestive enzymes.
3. Reinoculate with “good” bacteria.

Individuals who suffer from multiple food sensitivities and leaky gut often have an imbalance in gut flora. The friendly “good” bacteria are important to good digestive health. When there are more of the “bad” bacteria residing in the gut this can lead to digestive problems, sickness and other chronic diseases. Including fiber-rich foods can also help to establish microfloral balance

4. Repair and rebuild your intestinal cells and lining with specific nutrients that support the immune functioning of the gut.

Key Supplements to Aid in Repairing Leaky Gut

Ensure that you are supplementing with at least 10 - 20 billion CFU daily.

This important amino acid provides the cells in the digestive tract with energy for healing and strengthening.

This nutrient helps to promote the growth of the “good” bacteria and is required for healthy intestinal mucus production, which prevents irritation and inflammation.

A potent bioflavonoid and antioxidant that helps to prevent damage and decreases inflammation in the gut to facilitate healing.

DGL, Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root

These herbs are known as demulcents. Demulcent herbs help to soothe the mucus membranes that line the digestive tract, decreasing inflammation and helping them heal.

Digestive Enzymes

Supplementing with a full spectrum digestive enzyme with meals lessens the likelihood of improper digestion of food to ensure maximum nutrition for optimum healing.

Omega 3s

Pure omegas 3s from fish oil are always important when dealing with inflammation in the body and help promote healing.
