3 Electrolyte Drink Recipes from Everyday Roots

Image: Everyday Roots Yesterday I spoke about the importance of staying hydrated, especially in the summer months.

The only problem with giving blanket advice like that is that a lot of folks will think hydration, and reach for mass-marketed electrolyte drinks. You know the ones I'm talking about - they come in bright colours and have flashy names, and usually speak to being "extreme!"

Unfortunately, most electrolyte drinks you'll get at the corner store are FILLED with sugar, making them just as bad (and sometimes dehydrating) for you as soda.

So what's a healthy summer-lover to do? Make your own!

Everyday Roots is a fantastic website dedicated to all things healthy, and the three electrolyte drinks they have on offer are the best I've found.

Lay Low

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup of freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 ½ to 2 cups fresh water, depending on how strong you want the flavor
  • 1/8 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons natural sugar or honey, to taste

Directions

Toss everything into a food blender and blend until the honey is dissolved, or just use some elbow grease and blend it by hand. Pour yourself a tall glass, drop in a few ice cubes, and enjoy.

Bright ‘n Early

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 ½ to 2 cups of fresh water
  • 1/8 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons natural sugar or honey, to taste

Directions

Same as above. You can halve or double the recipe as you need, and feel free to experiment with flavours. Keep in mind citrus fruits, especially orange, are a good source of electrolytes.

Sweet & Smooth-ie

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of coconut water
  • 1 cup of strawberries
  • 1 cup of fresh water
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 1/8 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons natural sugar or honey, to taste

Directions

Throw into you blender and let it run until everything is thoroughly mixed together and the mixture is smooth.
