Canada Day - Canadian Inspired Recipes

Happy Canada Day!

Wherever and however you’re celebrating today, I’m sure it includes food.

It’s not often we consider Canadian cuisine here in Canada, but I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight some traditional indigenous recipes, alongside some Canadian classics and some fun red and white treats.

Pemmican

This First Nations way of preserving meat and berries in fat provides a nutrient rich addition to meals or snacks. Many first peoples subsisted off pemmican alone over hard winters.

Bannock

Before the arrival of wheat flour, Indigenous peoples would use the bulb of the Camus Flower to bake and grind into flour to make traditional bannock.

Three Sisters Casserole

“This recipe uses squash, corn and beans—a trio known as the “Three Sisters” because they grow together as a unit, with the cornstalks holding up the beans while the squash protects the roots at the base.”

Sweetgrass Cherry Cake

The sacred sweetgrass is used to flavour this cake, developed by the co-founder of Vancouver based bistro, Salmon n’ Bannock.

Raspberry and Coconut Popsicles

Red and white, refined sugar free delight!

Cedar Planked Salmon

Delicious, west coast flavour.

Canada day Fruit Kabobs

These are such a fun, cute and healthy treat!

No Bake Vegan Nanaimo Bars

A healthy take on a Canadian classic.

Healthy Thumbprint Cookies

These vegan red jam cookies are festive, sweetened with maple syrup and all around Canada Day approved.

Poutine

What Canada Day recipe list would be complete without poutine?
