The Lowdown on Adaptogens and Hormone Balance

Adaptogens. This has definitely become a buzz word in the health and wellness world in recent times. But adaptogens themselves are nothing new. In fact, they have been used in hormone support for centuries in ancient medical practice.

Adaptogens are unique in the fact that these herbs and mushrooms function differently based on what your body needs. In other words, they adapt. That makes them a powerful tool to have in your dietary repertoire, but where to start?

I’ve outlined a few different adaptogens and their potential in supporting your endocrine (Hormone) system to get you started, but always consult with your doctor before adding any supplements into your diet to make sure they are a good fit for your unique needs.

  • Maca Root

This potent root works to boost libido and energy levels and also helps reduce stress and anxiety. It can also help ease PMS symptoms as well as help in transitional hormonal periods such as coming off birth control pills, perimenopause, and stopping breastfeeding after having a baby. It is also a rich source of vitamin C. Maca is great added to smoothies, baked goods, or taken in capsules.

  • Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a powerful herb to help with thyroid function as well as reducing cortisol (The stress hormone) levels. It also helps boost testosterone production, which may be helpful in situations where women are experiencing a low sexual drive. Preliminary studies are also showing its effectiveness in slowing down estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancers. Traditionally, Ashwagandha is taken as a powder with warm milk and honey, but it can also be taken in capsule form or in a tea.

  • Schisandra

Schisandra berries are fantastic adrenal support. Your adrenal glands are responsible for helping to regulate your immune system, metabolism, as well as stress levels. Schisandra also helps detoxify the liver, which is heavily involved in hormone regulation. It is commonly taken as a powder, in capsules, or dried berries are eaten or made into a tea or tincture.

  • Reishi Mushrooms

Reishi is being shown to be a powerful option to ease certain symptoms of PCOS including unwanted hair growth and acne. Reishi also helps regulate blood sugar levels and may reduce fat stores and they are chock full of antioxidants. You can enjoy these mushrooms in powdered form in smoothies, or hot drinks, or use the dried mushrooms to make a tea.

  • Shilajit

This sticky mineral is found on rocks in India and boasts big libido-boosting power. Shilajit is shown to increase fertility in men and testosterone levels. It also has powerful memory-boosting capabilities and may help with chronic fatigue. It is most often taken in a capsule or a powder.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what adaptogens can do for you. I encourage you to consult with your naturopathic doctor to discuss what adaptogenic benefits you might be able to enjoy.
