Why You Should Drink Warm Lemon Water

Lemon waterLast week I gave a seminar on healthy hormones at Health Essentials in Victoria, BC, and one of the attendees asked me, “If you were to  give onlyone suggestion for balancing hormones, what would it be?”

I replied, “Start your day off with a cup of warm lemon water." 

Why you ask? So many reasons... but here are my top 6:


1. It's alkalizing

Lemons are alkaline in nature. On their own, yes, they are acidic, but once metabolized by the body they create an alkaline environment. More alkalinity helps decrease inflammation.


2. It supports immunity

Lemons are high in Vitamin C, which is excellent for supporting a healthy immune system for fighting those bad bugs!


 3. It aids digestion

The combination of the warm water and lemon help both the peristalsis of the digestive system as well as help to eliminate the build-up of toxins.


 4. Umm... it's hydrating!

Starting your day off with fresh lemon water also starts the day off with - that's right! - water. This will help you kick things off hydrated, which many of us fail to do!


 5. It detoxifies

Lemon water acts like a gentle diuretic to help flush out any toxins in the body. It also helps to purify and stimulate the liver.


6. It boosts metabolism

Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps to fight cravings. A more alkaline diet also helps to keep the metabolism moving!


So, going back to the original question: how does drinking warm lemon water daily help to balance your hormones? Well...the alkalinity and liver-supportive properties ensure that the body is metabolizing and breaking down harmful toxins from our environment, as well as the harmful estrogens that can wreak havoc on our natural hormone balance.

Harmful estrogens from plastics (BPA), pesticides, cosmetics and household cleaners can disrupt the delicate balance of our hormones - but not if we start each day off with a tall glass of lemon water!

In this summer heat, make sure you stay as hydrated as possible. Add a little lemon to your water and try to stay away from those sugary drinks and sodas.
